Because the spare tire in the trunk is not exposed to the weather or the suns UV rays, I feel it should not have to be discarded because of years as the tires on the car.Does the spare tire in a cars trunk deteriorate as quickly as the tires on the wheels?
I own cars on average 10 years and I have never had a problem with a spare tire. Just make sure that you keep it properly inflated and you should be fine. If the spare has over 200 miles on it. go to the dealer and have the doughnut replaced.Does the spare tire in a cars trunk deteriorate as quickly as the tires on the wheels?
Depends on the make and the climate you're in. Just because the tire is out of the elements, doesn't mean that the temp and moisture wont effect it. Just think of a cold glass of water sitting in the hot sun collect condensation. It's kind of the same with anything. It's cooler in the morning and the temperature change in you car as the day winds on rises cause some sort of expansion and contraction like anything else. In my experience, it didn't matter if the tire was in or out of the elements, either way, they can dry rot and become useless. Periodically you should be checking for proper inflation of your spare to keep it in tip top shape because as I found the other day, you never know when you're gonna have a blow out on the highway.Does the spare tire in a cars trunk deteriorate as quickly as the tires on the wheels?
faster actually. the lack of use is bad for the rubber and can actually cause a suprise blow out. your factory manual actually recomended installing the spare as part of a normal tire rotation in the old days but todays cars dont always have a normal spare and is only meant to be drive from the sight of the flat to the nearest shop to be replaced. this at under 50 mph! that tiny tire is simply a bandage not a full recovery. the flexing of the tire is good for it where as the non movement is stiffening to the materials.
